How to Clean Mold Off Walls

If you find mold on walls in your home, there are a few steps you can take to eliminate it. Mold is an annoyance and may give off an unpleasant odor and cause allergic symptoms.

Mold can be removed from walls using bleach, vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide; however, taking precautions while using these products is essential, as bleach fumes can be hazardous to your lungs.

Bleach

Bleach is a commonly-used product among homemakers but should be used cautiously. Not only can it sanitize, but it may also cause respiratory problems and corrode metal and wood surfaces. Therefore, caution should always be exercised when using bleach.

Mold is never desirable in your home – it stinks, makes your living space appear uninviting, and could even eat away at walls and drywall. That is why you must eliminate it as quickly as possible.

A solution of one part bleach to three parts water applied via a spray bottle can be effective for small mold patches. Lay it on the affected area, scrub with a stiff brush, rinse, and then pat dry.

Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask when using bleach. This will shield your skin from the harsh fumes released during use.

Vinegar

If you want to eliminate mold without the smell, vinegar is an ideal solution. Its mild acid can kill 82% of mold species without producing toxic fumes like bleach.

You’ll need a spray bottle and white distilled vinegar to use vinegar (do not dilute with water). Fill the bottle up and spray onto the affected area until saturated.

Once the area has been sprayed, allow it to sit for at least an hour. This gives the mold time to absorb the vinegar and eventually die.

Next, you can use a baking soda solution to remove mold stains. Pour two cups of water and one teaspoon of baking soda into a spray bottle and shake vigorously until evenly mixed.

Once you’ve applied the baking soda, use a scrubbing brush or scouring pad to scrub away all traces of mold. Finally, rinse the surface with warm water.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an all-purpose cleaner used on many different surfaces around the house. It quickly breaks up grease, polishes metals, unclogs drains, and much more.

Deodorizers are also helpful in the home to eliminate unpleasant odors. It’s commonly used in the kitchen to eliminate unpleasant aromas from refrigerators or other hard-to-reach places.

Create a water and baking soda solution, then apply it to the moldy area. Use a sponge or brush to scrub away any mold easily, then thoroughly rinse with water.

Once more, spray the area and dry it into a protective layer. This will prevent the further growth of mold.

Baking soda is a gentle and natural way to remove mold, making it an ideal option for families with small children or pets. Furthermore, baking soda is safer than other cleaners like bleach since it won’t damage paint or wallpaper and doesn’t leave behind an unpleasant odor.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective bleaching agent for mold and mildew stains, as well as an effective disinfectant and antiseptic.

Sterilizer and disinfectant solution used to sterilize surfaces in homes, offices, schools, hospitals, and other personal or commercial properties is safe to use with no chemicals that could be hazardous for people or pets.

Unlike vinegar and baking soda, hydrogen peroxide leaves no residue or unpleasant odors after cleaning. Furthermore, it’s environmentally friendly and won’t damage drywall or other porous surfaces like carpets and fabrics.

However, using hydrogen peroxide for mold removal does have some drawbacks. Most notably, it does not eliminate the mycotoxins in wide mold varieties.
