The Benefits of a Flower Garden

If you have a flower garden, you know the many benefits of keeping it in good condition. A flower garden can increase production by feeding plants every two to three weeks. It should also be trimmed regularly, and dead flowers should be removed from the plant. You can donate extra flowers to local nursing homes, friends, or neighbors. The best time to harvest blooms is in the morning or early evening when temperatures are cooler.

It should be an appendage to the architecture.

Flower gardens should resemble the architecture of the house in appearance and scale. They can be small and regular in outline, but they should be symmetrical, especially if attached to the house. Also, flower gardens should have symmetrical walks and beds. However, if the garden is very small, it may not be as pleasing as the architecture.

It should have a fragrance.

Flowers with fragrance can enhance the overall sensory experience of your garden, evoking memories or heralding a new season. While some flowers only have a faint scent, others can perfume the entire yard. Choose scented flowers that bloom at different times to provide a year-round fragrance.

Fragrant flowers attract pollinators, draw people, and entice insects to hidden blossoms. Some are fragrant only at night, while others release fragrance throughout the day. The fragrance is released by the flower’s essential oils called attars, which vaporize easily and permeate the air.

If you’re looking for fragrance in your flower garden, you may want to consider planting lilies. Lilies emit a strong spicy-sweet aroma and last a long time. Lilies also come in a wide variety of colors. Lilies of the valley, for example, are widely used in perfumes because of their sweet, honey-like fragrance. Another fragrant plant is the clematis Montana, which blooms in showy white fragrant clusters. Carolina jessamine is another fragrant plant with a yellow flower cluster.

Many fragrant plants can be grown on a large mixed border. The heat of summer brings out their fragrance in the leaves and petals. For example, bright Eyes phlox, Perilla fruticosa, and Royal Standard hostas can emit a lily-scented fragrance. Don’t limit your flower garden to flowers, though. Aromatic plants can also be useful in cooking.

It should be a place of beauty.

A flower garden should be a sanctuary for the beauty and celebration of nature. Besides flowers, it’s also important to consider hardscape elements. For instance, you might use pergolas and trellises to create a clear boundary between public and private spaces. Likewise, you can use arbors as a focal point in your flower garden.
